Marika Galea bio:

Marika Galea is an bassist hailing from Scarborough, Ontario. She began studying bass at age fifteen with Toronto mainstay Jon Maharaj, and she has also had the pleasure of intermittent lessons with many other talented bassists, including David Clark, David Buda, Barry Smith, Neil Swainson and Tim Dawson (TSO). She is currently on staff at the National Music Camp of Canada, and has recently completed a two-year engagement with the JazzFM91 Youth Big Band. Marika has performed with a number of skillful artists, including Alex Dean, Campbell Ryga, Brian O'Kane, Nick 'Brownman' Ali, Deborah Cox, Rajaton, Ashley Ingram and the Thelma Yellin Big Band. She has also opened for Al Jarreau, Branford Marsalis and Joey Calderazzo, Joey DeFrancesco, and Randy Brecker. Her accomplishments at Canada's largest music festival for youth, Musicfest Canada's 'Nationals', include a National Honour Award, five gold awards and two silver awards (spanning the choral, orchestral and instrumental jazz divisions), and two scholarships to Humber College's Contemporary Music degree program. Marika also played in the Canadian Wind Symphony (formerly known as the National Concert Band of Canada) at the National Arts Centre as a part of Musicfest 2010. She is grateful to have won various awards from her high school and the Humber College Community Music School. Most recently, she was awarded of the U of T Scholar's Award, the Noreen and Phil Nimmons Entrance Scholarship in Jazz Performance and the Distillery Jazz Festival Scholarship, for which she is most grateful. Marika has also had the great privilege of completing workshops with the who's who of Canadian jazz, including Kirk MacDonald, Christine Jensen, Pat LaBarbera, John MacLeod, Jim Vivian, Ted Quinlan, Neil Swainson, Jason Logue, Colleen Allen, Kevin Turcotte, Kieran Overs, Mike Downes, Pat Collins, Nancy Walker, Lorne Lofsky, and many more. In the summer of 2010, Marika attended Berklee College of Music's Five-Week Summer Performance Program in Boston, MA on a tuition scholarship. She is honoured to have studied various subjects with world-renowned musicians and educators such as Fernando Michelin, Wayne Naus and Phil Wilson. After receiving offers of study and scholarships from several institutions, Marika has begun degree studies in Jazz Performance at the University of Toronto.
