Beverly Taft Quartet

Toronto-based vocalist Beverly Taft has performed throughout Toronto, Ontario as well as venues in San Francisco, Sao Paulo, Sarasota, and Japan, featuring music from the “Great American Songbook” as well as Brazilian bossa nova, and more recently, the jazz/bluesoriginals she’s written with Nathan Hiltz.  Her repertoire spans five decades and a few continents, and in addition to leading her own "straight ahead and swingin'" jazz combo, she leads several different musical ventures, including "The Bossa Nova Project" (in Portuguese and English), "Beverly and her Swell Fellas" (20s, 30s and 40s), “Latina Esquina,” and French music group "Les Chansonnettes."  Recently, she’s been delving into the remarkable world of Frank Loesser, and has performed two shows of his material: “Loesser is The Most” and “More Loesser.”  Inspired initially by the terrific lyrics, and then Loesser’s own compositions, Beverly was also intrigued by the stories about Loesser and his songs (like “If I Were a Bell”, “Inch Worm,” “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” and so many others.  The October 23rd matinee at the Rex will include several of Beverly’s greatest Loesser favourites (ha!), Brazilian bossa (from Bonfa, Gilberto, Jobim, and Lyra), Hiltz-Taft originals, and standards and rarities from several other composers.

Writers and broadcasters have described Beverly’s 2014 CD (ten originals with arranger/composer/guitarist Nathan Hiltz) as an “ebullient parfait of a vocal jazz/big band CD,” “swinging richness,” “a meeting of advanced musical minds,” and have praised its “great vocals, tight arrangements and crack orchestra.”
