Big Band Slam
Each year we invite high schools from across the Greater Toronto Area to duke it out during The Big Band Slam – an afternoon of trumpet blasting, trombone sliding, sax squealing excitement – during the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. This is not a competition – no marks will be given or awards assigned – but is instead a chance to showcase some of the outstanding music being made by high school music students across the city.
The 2015 Big Band Slam is Thursday June 25, 2-5 pm at The Rex Hotel. We’re pleased to announce saxophonist extraordinaire Kelly Jefferson as guest artist and host for the 2015 Big Band Slam. Kelly will rehearse and perform with each ensemble, and host the Slam on the day of the event. The bands participating in the 2015 Slam are:

KELLY JEFFERSON (saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist, piccolo-player) was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University in Montreal, and a Master’s Degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York. He serves on the faculty of York University and previously taught at Humber College in Toronto and McGill University in Montreal. He has adjudicated at music festivals across the country, and given numerous workshops throughout Canada and the United States.
He has performed with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and leading jazz artists including Maria Schneider, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Bill Holman, Ray Anderson, Michel Legrand, Ray Brown, Nicholas Payton, Renee Rosnes, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Denzal Sinclaire. He toured the United States and Europe extensively as tenor saxophonist with Maynard Ferguson and Big Bop Nouveau. He leads the Kelly Jefferson Quartet and co-leads the Jefferson Grant Quintet with trombonist Kelsey Grant.
