Big Band Slam

Each year the Big Band Slam brings together high school bands from across the Greater Toronto Area for an afternoon of trumpet blasting, trombone sliding, sax squealing excitement. The Slam is not a competition; it is instead a chance to showcase some of the outstanding music being made by high school music students across the city.

Acclaimed trumpeter Jason Logue will serve as  guest artist for the 2017 Big Band Slam, rehearsing with each band prior to the Slam. On the day of the Slam, Jason will act as emcee for the event, and perform with each ensemble. The bands participating in the 2017 Slam are:

  • Martingrove Collegiate Jazz Band, under the direction of Michael Davies
  • Don Mills Collegiate Jazz Band, under the direction of Cathy Whiteside
  • High Rendition Youth Jazz Band, under the direction of Carmen Gassi
  • Along with special guests

  • The Hart House Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Ernesto Cervini
  • The Big Band Slam is a free, all-ages event, and is generously supported by the Ken Page Memorial Trust and The Asper Foundation.
