Emily Steinwall was born in Toronto in a family of musicians, and has been influenced by a wide array of musical styles. When in high school, she fell in love with the tenor saxophone and learned the language of jazz from her grandparents, Jack and Carol Long, with whom she played regularly. Emily graduated from Humber college in 2017 after studying saxophone. That same year she was awarded the Mary Alice Stewart Award (presented by JazzFM91.1) and was named one of CBC’s “35 best Canadian jazz artists under 35”. In 2018 Steinwall was named the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival’s Rising Young Star, and toured as a backup singer with Alessia Cara. While touring with Cara, Steinwall performed on stages including Madison Square Gardens and the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, among other notable television shows and stadiums.
Steinwall has recently focused her energy in fronting a self-titled project, which features her as a songwriter, singer, saxophone & flute player. She quickly made a reputation for herself in the Toronto music scene with her unique and transportive performances, and last year headlined Exclaim! Magazine’s “Class of 2020 Showcase”. In March 2021 Steinwall released her first, self-produced album called Welcome to the Garden, which was met with critical acclaim.
