Gillian Margot, gifted with an exquisite voice and an exceptional understanding of the jazz idiom, is known for the impact she continues to have on the Canadian jazz scene. Her authentic sound and creatively modern approach to music make for unforgettable performances.
Margot graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts double major in Music and Anthropology from York University. There she twice received the Ella Fitzgerald Award and scholarship for excellence in jazz performance. From 1999 to 2006 Margot performed extensively with Canada’s renowned Afro-centric choir, The Nathaniel Dett Chorale. She continues to be a strong advocate for their mission to educate and empower humans, using the full spectrum of Afrocentric music as a medium. After taking her jazz trio to Australia (2003) and Hong Kong (2006), Margot was awarded the Chalmers Professional Development Grant by the Ontario Arts Council in 2007. Recently, Margot completed her studies in piano and composition with internationally renowned American jazz pianist, Norman Simmons, and is looking forward to the upcoming release of her debut CD in 2010.
