Barnes/Woldemichael EthioJazz Quartet
Judaism in Ethiopia dates back to Biblical times. Autonomous Jewish regions in the area are believed to have existed before the Christian Era. The Barnes/Woldemichael EthioJazz Quartet explores this intersection of culture with classic EthioJazz from the 1970’s and new original compositions. This collaboration enchants its audience with the distinctive sound and vibe of Ethiopia – the perfect way to unwind from the week!
Toronto born composer and drummer Daniel Barnes is distinguished in both Jazz and World Music circles. During the 1990s he toured internationally and recorded with two giants in Ethiopian music, Ms. Aster Aweke and Mr. Mouhamed Ahmed. It was in Ethiopia where he met and first worked with saxophonist Girma Woldemichael. Now based in Toronto, Girma was born in Addis Ababa where he played full time during the Golden Age of Ethiopian Music. www.danielbarnes.net
