Originally from Toronto, Canada, Marika Galea is a bass student at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.
Marika has enjoyed the privilege of playing with a number of skilful artists including Tim Ries, Bucky Pizzarelli, Donny McCaslin, and Aaron Goldberg. She has also opened for the likes of Branford Marsalis & Joey Calderazzo, Joey DeFrancesco, Al Jarreau and Randy Brecker.
A former student of the University of Toronto and the Humber College Community Music School, Marika has studied bass with Dave Young, Jon Maharaj, and Tim Dawson (Toronto Symphony Orchestra). A 2012 nomination for Berklee College of Music’s Slaight Family Scholarship, a Musicfest Canada National Honour Award, the 2011 Distillery Jazz Festival Scholarship and the 2011 Noreen & Phil Nimmons Entrance Scholarship to the University of Toronto are just a few of the highlights on her resume.
Engagements playing with the Canadian Wind Orchestra & the JazzFM91 Youth Big Band, on-staff at the National Music Camp of Canada, reviewing for the TD Toronto Jazz Festival and hosting the Classic Rex Jazz Jam have distinguished Marika on the Toronto scene. She hopes to continue making music in Toronto, Boston, and beyond for many years to come.
