Michael Skeete bio:
Michael Skeete combines his love of great melodies and lyrics he can feel, with a unique style and sound to make him one of the freshest voices on the Toronto jazz scene. He has been called ‘smooth’, ‘silky’, ‘sweet’ and ‘buttery’, all with good reason. He sings with an ease and grace that comes naturally, whether interpreting familiar old standards with innovative phrasing and rhythms or making a new song his own.
Working in a wide range of formats from duos to a big band, Michael’s performances are always soulful and swinging. He chooses his accompanists, distinguished artists in their own right, from some of Toronto’s most outstanding jazz musicians. Michael’s voice has tremendous clarity. Whether he’s singing ballads, swing, latin, or re-working jazz standards with caribbean rhythms, the listener becomes drawn into the melodic story he tells.
Born in Toronto and raised in Barbados, Michael showed an interest in music from an early age. While performing with church and school choirs, he won several awards for his vocal abilities, encircling a broad array of musical styles. Michael is establishing himself as a regular performer in Toronto’s jazz clubs, lounges and restaurants. He has completed his first album , ‘Blame It On My Youth’, released June 2008.
Michael continues to develop his distinctive approach to jazz, as well as a faithful following of fans, which grows with every performance.
