Lineup: Steven Cole guitar, Shawn Nykwist sax, Peter Telford bass, Ben Ball drums. The theme is ‘Songs I like’ including arrangements of music by Hendrix, the Beach Boys and others, my own compositions, and a few not so standards.
Guitarist Steven Cole performs his own jazz and rock influenced compositions. This is the most recent incarnation of his original group Thermal Quartet started in 2000, having performed at festivals such as the Montreal Jazz festival GM stage, recorded for TV broadcast at the Distillery Jazz festival, and Radio Canada for the Silence en jazz series in Montreal. This group features versatile players Shawn Nyquist on tenor and soprano, Peter Telford on electric and upright bass, and Max Senitt on drums.
Steven went to Music and Art high school in New York City playing double bass, continuing music studies at Ithaca College, and composition later on at Manhattan School of Music and CUNY. While living in the San Francisco Bay area he played with notables Chet Baker and Mark Levine, and performed with the jazz vocal group Bug Alley Band at the 1981 Monterey Jazz festival including featured artists Larry Vuckovich and Clark Terry.
His two recordings are Thermal Quartet – Soaring and Steven Cole group – Stand Clear
The late Geoff Chapman reviewed his first CD Soaring:
“The new album is impressive, with cleanly struck notes, unusual chord voicings
and a barrelful of ideas that brings all members into play … The title track
lets musicians stretch, Cole’s vigorous ideas a standout as he reaches for
imaginative frontiers. There’s never a sense of musicians coasting while another is
in the spotlight.”
