Nick Adema is a Canadian trombonist/composer currently based in Amsterdam. Nick is a proud Rath Trombones artist.

Exploring the plurality of sonic environments is Nick Adema’s forte. Using the modest nature of the slide to express his musical vigour, Nick is one of the most versatile trombonists coming out of Canada. Hailing from the nation's capital Ottawa, Nick quickly came onto the scene as a curious mind who embraced spontaneity and playfulness in his music.

Inspired by his mother, Nicholas used the Covid-19 pandemic as an opportunity to create a full length album demiLAN (released October 22nd 2021), in which he shows off his broad creativity as a writer, and creates a masterful performance alongside several flourishing/up-and-coming musicians. This body of work features a three horn lineup, vocals , and a full rhythm section. The band tackles compositions that are experimental, modern and energetic in nature. As a result, this ensemble captures an energetic, brave and thoughtful performance that is one of a kind.

Coming on the heels of his first full-length album demiLAN, (“teeming with originality and confidence” – Yoshi Wall, The WholeNote), trombonist Nick Adema has teamed up with saxophonist Alex Manoukas for a new recording project with their newly formed band the Adema Manoukas Octet. These eight young Toronto all-stars have been performing together in various combinations for years, providing an alternative perspective on the Canadian jazz sound. Together, they offer a glimpse of a new music full of blistering solos, thought-provoking melodies, and world-class ensemble playing. With their debut album New Roots, it is clear that the next wave of talented Canadian jazz artists is knocking on tomorrow’s door. This record is a refreshing celebration of the music of today by the musicians of tomorrow.

Nick has also been the recipient of the CvA Best Soloist award (2023), Siena Jazz Scholarship (2022) Holland Scholarship (2021), Albert and Wilhelmine Renewable Scholarship (2017-2021), Music Fest Nationals: National Arts Center, Best Brass Player Scholarship (2017) and was also a participant in the Ottawa Youth Jazz Summit (TD Ottawa Jazz Festival) (2019).

Nick has had the opportunity to gain instruction from Micheal Dease, Marshall Gilkes, Nils Wolgram, Mark Ferguson, Ilja Reijngoujd, WIlliam Carn, and has been able to perform on the same stage with Tim Hagans, Renee Rosnes, Dick Oatts, Ben Wendel, Nils Wogram Kris Davis and Andrew Rathbun in various academic engagements.

Nick obtained his undergraduate degree in jazz performance at the University of Toronto
