William Carn Trombonist, Composer, Teacher Juno-winning artist William Carn has emerged as one of Canada’s leading contemporary jazz trombonists and composers. He has performed internationally throughout Europe and Asia as well as throughout Canada. He recently won the 2020 Juno award for Best Jazz Group for his work in the ensemble Turboprop.

 

As a bandleader, William is currently focusing on the Carn Davidson 9, an ensemble he co-leads with his wife and saxophonist, Tara Davidson. This group features 9 of Canada’s best jazz musicians and has produced 3 highly-acclaimed recordings including, The History of Us, a musical reflection on family and life. His most recent project is called CHOICES - a collection of material created over the past 3 years.

 

As well, William has lead several critically noted groups; the William Carn Quintet and Run Stop Run. Run Stop Run’s debut 2012 recording was a collaboration with influential New York saxophonist, David Binney. He has performed and recorded with jazz artists including Rob McConnell, Randy Brecker, David Binney, Kenny Wheeler, Tim Hagans, Barry Harris, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Vince Mendoza, Don Braden, Mike Murley, Hilario Duran, Andrew Downing, Jim McNeely, and John Clayton.

 

William also enjoys a diverse freelance career in Toronto. Studio and concert engagements have included Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Feist, Johnny Reid, Sarah Slean, Janelle Monae, Hawksley Workman, Melissa McClelland, Luc Doucet, Emily Haynes, Kathleen Edwards, Royal Wood, Matt Dusk, Jon Secada, Peabo Bryson, Sheena Easton, Christopher Cross, Dionne Taylor, Michael Kaeshammer, Jill Barber, Emile-Claire Barlow, Sophie Millman, Jeff Healy, Colin James. William regularly performs in pit orchestras for Mirvish Productions and the Stratford Festival. He has also been featured on over 200 commercial recordings as a performer.

 

William is a proud Rath Trombone artist as well as an AR Resonance Mouthpiece artist. William has taught throughout Canada for such distinguished institutions as Humber College, the University of Victoria, University of Saskatewan, University of Regina, Capilano College, Grant MacEwan College, Mohawk College. He is a regular faculty member at the University of Toronto Jazz Studies program.
